Where are we going? Science! Murder! Sex!
Killer robotic spiders! Men who are not animals! Men who are ducks! We will race
to the moon!
Built on spastic technical riffy metalic nerdy punk, Anthemunanthem
delivers
an excitement-per-minute ratio that few other discs can afford.
Song themes
range from the perverse stalkings of manical rapist "Herman
Keypad", to the action-packed science fiction dramas of "Number
28" and "Spiderfarm".
The music is metal and clean guitar,
expertly played like a horny savant show-off - bass is overplayed with
lots of notes and pops and Primusy hammerons
- drums
are likety-split and tight. Three people sing and scream and talk over
the fast, fast, hectic music. Songs are the opposite of repititous - they
are
partsy and
busy and tight and hectic and frantic - grooves are only tasted for seconds,
and you'll have to listen to the disc again if you want to hear a chorus
twice.
This record sounds like the riffy talky parts of Nomeansno, speed
and riffs of The Victim's Family, (in fact, much of the Alternative Tentacles
catalog
might
be appropriate comparisons) Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, (and other Mike
Patton stuff) ,Devo, John Zorn-like rapid changes and jazzy interludes,
Failure
- like riffs and science fiction themes, Queen!. moments of punk like
SNFU or
The Offspring,
The Flaming Lips, Mark Ribot and the Rootless Cosmopolitans, some bass
wizardry like Primus, many moments like Helmet's "Meantime",
fans of Thrice might enjoy all the super-guitar played here, even moments
of Metallica or
Iron Maiden can be heard, They Might Be Giants? cartoony moments that
come from Bugs
Bunny shorts, jokes! drama! Kalamazoo 93' comtemporaries (e.g., Thought
Industry, Twitch, Killswitch, Sounds like Braille), Unique? No, but at
least very rare!
I'm doing my best here to describe - Download #28 - its a good sample.
Pop
music fans should absolutely hate this. Passive listeners who like
to snap their fingers and sing along should go check out The Hudson Debacle
(my other
cool band).
